The increase of tobacco and e-cigarette age

We see a trend around the globe around raising the legal age to purchase tobacco products and e-cigarettes from 18 to 21. Many who haven’t done this, are seriously considering doing so.

One of the reasons cited for this is that it will reduce tobacco usage among young people, although there is little evidence this will deter youth consumption, according to an article by Lindsey Stroud. She points out that the illegality of other substances, such as alcohol, has never stopped young people from consuming it.

Public health experts have also pointed out that barring under 18s from purchasing tobacco and Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) product will lead to the creation and expansion of the black market. This would make it near impossible for authorities to evaluate the vaping market or regulate the standards of products.

Smoking rates are declining as it is. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that between 2011 and 2016 cigarette smoking decreased among middle and high school students. Thus, there is no need for the increase in smoking age.
